Bert Kinzey graduated from Virginia Tech in 1968 with a degree in Business Administration. Upon graduation, he was commissioned a second lieutenant in the U. S. Army and was sent to the Army's Air Defense School at Fort Bliss, Texas.

During his eight years as an officer, Bert commanded a Hawk guided missile battery just south of the DMZ in Korea. Later he originated, wrote, and taught classes on the air threat, military air power, and air defense suppression at Fort Bliss.

It was during this time that he did his first writing. Bert was dissatisfied with the existing manuals and other materials available for his classes because they were inaccurate and incomplete. As a result, he wrote his own reference books and other publications. Although he intended for these to be used only in his classes, they were soon placed on the Army's official publication list and distributed throughout the military.

In 1976, Bert resigned from active duty, but his reputation for being knowledgeable about all aspects of military air power soon led to his taking a civilian position as a subject matter expert on the air threat and world air power with the Department of Defense. His primary responsibility was to develop a new program to teach the proper identification of both friendly and enemy aircraft so as to insure the destruction of hostile aircraft and the safety of friendly aircraft. This was the first such program in the world to feature dynamic simulation. Bert has also flown with active, reserve, and National Guard squadrons on training missions to observe the conduct and procedures of air-to-air and air-to-ground combat. As both an officer and a civilian, Bert often briefed military and political leaders of the United States and other nations on subjects related to air power, the air threat, and air defense.

While he was working for the Department of Defense, Bert started Detail & Scale, a part time business to produce a new series of books on military aircraft. The Detail & Scale Series of publications was the first to focus on the many details of military aircraft to include cockpits, weapon systems, radars and avionics systems, differences between variants, airframe design, and much more. These books became so successful that Bert soon resigned from his position with the Department of Defense and began writing and producing books full time. Soon, other well-known aviation writers began writing books for the Detail & Scale Series, so Bert became both an author and an editor. He has always edited his own writing and remains one of the very few aviation writers allowed to do so by publishers. Later Bert added aircraft carriers to the Detail & Scale Series, and he also began a second series called Colors & Markings. Each book in this series focused on a specific aircraft type and illustrated the paint schemes and markings of every unit that had flown that aircraft. Bert also produced a book for McGraw-Hill on the Gulf War entitled The Fury of Desert Storm: The Air Campaign. In January 2002, Bert produced his one-hundredth aviation publication. That number has since risen to 114 published titles. Of these, he wrote ninety-five, while the remaining nineteen were written by other aviation writers while being edited and produced by Bert.

Bert has always taken many of the photographs that appear in his publications, and he believes that whenever possible, it is best that the author take photos in order to precisely illustrate what is being discussed in the text and captions. His has also done photography for other books, magazine articles, web sites, and for research and publicity that has been provided to clients. He owns one of the most extensive collections of aviation photographs in the world. Over the years, Bert has given numerous presentations and speeches about military air power, the air threat, military aviation history, and aircraft types, working these into his busy schedule of writing, editing, doing research, taking photographs, and consulting.

In June 2004, health issues caused Bert to have to retire from his work. His series of aviation books came to an end for nine years. In 2013, Bert teamed up with Rock Roszak to begin producing the books again, but the new ones are now greatly expanded digital publications that are available in both the Apple iBooks and Amazon Kindle formats. Rock had previously illustrated some of Bert's books, but in the new arrangement, Rock has become the art director for Detail & Scale and is responsible for the layouts. The first digital title in the Detail & Scale Series was released in December 2013 and more titles are being added at the rate of two or three per year

One of the reasons this website,, has been created is because Bert wanted to place much of his large collection of aircraft photographs, especially the rare photographs of cockpits, radars, armament, and other details, on the Internet so that it can be available to aviation enthusiasts and researchers everywhere. It is Bert's desire to encourage a new generation of aviation writers to follow in his footsteps and produce references on military aircraft using all forms of media.

Bert also runs the Detail & Scale Facebook page to share photos and information about military aircraft with enthusiasts around the world. Several other military aviation photographers and historians assist Bert with the page.

Colonel Richard S. "Rock" Roszak is the son of immigrants who came to America from a war-ravaged Europe. He grew up in Staunton, Virginia and graduated from VPI in 1971 as a member of the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets. He was commissioned into the United States Air Force where he amassed over 2,000 flying hours, mostly in B-52D/F/G and C-135 aircraft, over a 27-year active duty career. His staff tours included time as a special assistant to the Air Force Chief of Staff, liaison officer for strategic aircraft programs to the House and Senate Armed Services Committees, and as the Senior Technical Advisor to the Special Ambassador for assistance agreements to demilitarize strategic nuclear launch vehicles of the former Soviet Union.

After retiring from the Air Force in 1998, Rock spent 14 years on the staff of the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets, returning to where he began his military career. During those years he established an alumni aviation gallery, which featured his artwork of aircraft flown by cadet grads to highlight more than 60 years of military aviation history. An avid modeler in his younger years, he has been a digital artist for over 13 years and has illustrated several books in partnership with his friend, Bert Kinzey. He learned digital publishing by creating his first e-book about the aviators whose aircraft are displayed in the campus gallery entitled "Hokie High: Combat Aircraft and Aviators of the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets Alumni", available both as an iPad iBook and for the Kindle platform.

Besides being the vice president of Detail & Scale, Rock also creates all of the artwork in our digital volumes and handles the electronic publishing end of the business. His duties include book layout and management of the publishing process for international sales through Apple and Amazon. Rock currently lives in Blacksburg, Virginia, with his wife, Patty, two daughters, and six grandchildren.

Vince Mankowski grew up outside of Omaha, Nebraska, in the shadow of Offut Air Force Base and the Arrows to Aerospace Museum where he developed a love for all things related to military aviation.  His family moved to Northern Virginia while he was in high school, and he entered the U. S. Marine Corps there in 1983 where Vince was designated an Intermediate Maintenance Activity Avionics Specialist supporting A-4M/OA-4M, AV-8B, UH-1N, AH-1W, CH-46E, CH-53D/E, KC-130F/R/T, and Presidential Helicopters during a twenty year career.
Vince enjoyed his first duty station supporting retiring A-4M Skyhawks and OA-4M FastFAC aircraft.  The Marine Air Group included AV-8A/C Harriers, and after transitioning to the AV-8B in the mid 80’s, he deployed with the group to Norway, Iwakuni, Japan, and all over CONUS.  Vince spent the eight months of Desert Shield/Storm aboard USS NASSAU with VMA-331 “Bumblebees.” Transferring to Quantico, Virginia, in late 1991, he began Presidential and Special Mission support with HMX-1 at the Marine Corps Air Facility, supporting President George H. W. Bush (41) and President William J. Clinton (42) on worldwide missions.  Another transfer to Okinawa, Japan, in 1996 found him with the 1st Marine Air Wing supporting four rotary wing squadrons and the KC-130F/R/T refueling aircraft at Futenma Air Station.  He also served as the Class Desk, managing modifications on all five type/model/series aircraft to support them until transitioning to more modern airframes.  His ability and reputation in this position garnered a ‘by name’ request for transfer to a Program Office in an acquisition billet.  His final duty was with the Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) in Patuxent River Naval Air Station as the Configuration Manager for the H-1 Helicopter Program Office.  Vince managed modifications programs for extant UN-1N and AH-1W light utility and attack helicopters as well as the intake and production configuration of the remanufactured UH-1Y and AH-1Z Venom and Viper aircraft. 
Vince retired from the Marine Corps in November 2003 after twenty years of service.  Since retirement he has worked at NAVAIR, with a couple of short exceptions, as a Program Analyst and Configuration Manager on multiple aircraft and weapon systems.  Currently Vince is the Assistant Program Manager, Configuration and Data Systems for all Training Systems, where he manages the configuration of over 1,600 fielded training systems and devices for Marine Corps trainers, Navy trainers, General Training, and the Training Ranges.
            Vince began modeling control line flying models with his father in the mid 1970’s.  He built static plastic models along the way as well.  When he was in the Marine Corps, the space requirements (and lack of hobby related funds!) meant Vince only kept building scale plastic models throughout his adult life, and transferring his growing materials and stash around the world was a challenge unto itself.  While stationed at Quantico, Vince became a member of IPMS/USA and the IPMS/Northern Virginia Modelers where he has served as the vice president, president, and regional contest director.  He has maintained his membership in IPMS/USA continuously since 1993 and builds models to this day focusing on aircraft (his first love), with side projects in autos, submarines, the occasional figure and dinosaurs thrown in to break the rhythm of aircraft from time to time.
Vince has developed a passion for promoting the scale modeling hobby through social media where he is an administrator/moderator for several scale modeling groups, including Scale Aircraft Modeling with Detail & Scale.  He has developed and published tips and techniques videos, airbrushing tutorials, weathering techniques, and conducts many Facebook Live! Events including group builds and model show videos.  He brings this passion to Detail & Scale to help build member interaction, expand the group build energy, and promote the D&S brand as the ‘go to’ source for everyone seeking top shelf military aviation reference materials.
            Vince lives in Lexington Park, Maryland, with his wife and near six of their ten children and sixteen of their eighteen grandchildren.

Born and raised on the east end of Long Island, Haagen Klaus grew up around airplanes, minutes from Grumman Aircraft Corporation’s flight test center at Calverton, New York. Among his earliest memories are test pilots, F-14s, and building kits at the dining room table.  He has been building scale models continuously since 1985, and for just as long, learning anything and everything about the history of aviation, aircraft engineering, and experimental flight test.

Loss of perfect eyesight in high school derailed his hopes of being a military aviator, but soon discovered archaeology in college. Haagen graduated with degrees in anthropology, archaeology, and biological anthropology from SUNY Plattsburgh (BA, 2000), Southern Illinois University  (MA, 2003), and The Ohio State University (Ph.D., 2008).  Since 2003, he has directed a multi-national, multi-decade bioarchaeological research project in the deserts of Peru. Haagen is a widely published professor at George Mason University just outside Washington, D.C., teaching and training students in human anatomy, bone biology, South American archaeology, and forensic anthropology. 

Since 1997, Haagen has been an active member of the International Plastic Modeler’s Society. He was a co-founder of IPMS/Champlain Valley, serving as their first vice president and helped bring about the annual CAN-AM Con model contest series that continues today. Haagen has also worked in hobby retail on-and-off since 1997, establishing extensive background knowledge on kits, aftermarket products, manufacturing and modeling techniques, and tools.

Jim Rotramel - Contributor

Jim Rotramel has been interested in military aviation for his entire life. It was probably inspired by his father’s work as a USAF (and later airline) airplane mechanic, but whatever the reason, he caught the bug early.

After gaining his BS in Aeronautical Engineering from Wichita State University, Jim went on to a twenty-year career in the Air Force that included ten years and more than 1,000 hours as a WSO in F-111Ds at Cannon AFB, New Mexico, and F-111Fs at RAF Lakenheath, where he also became the chief route planner for both wings.

An avid photographer, many of the photos he took during this time have been published. Today, most of his photography is of aircraft and ordnance details…and of his grandkids.

After retiring from the Air Force, Jim went to work at NAS Patuxent River, where he helped develop the first automated weapon-planning program for the Navy’s F/A-18A-D Hornet. As an outgrowth of this work, he re-wrote the weapon loading chapters for the H-60, P-3, S-3, AV-8 and F-14. He currently works for the Chief Engineer of the F/A-18 program.

A photograph of the underside of an A-1 SPAD in 1977 kindled Jim’s interest in aircraft ordnance. Naively thinking he could do a quick summary of USAF weapons in about three weeks, he quickly found out how wrong he was! Many years later, he’s become something of an expert on the history of U.S. aircraft ordnance and has done numerous technical drawings of many types of ordnance. Scale model kit manufacturers have used many of his drawings to improve the accuracy of their products.

After he retires in 2016, Jim plans to devote a lot of time writing about this subject instead of just contributing his expertise to the works of others.

Jim has been an advisor to Detail & Scale for many years, principally in the area of aircraft ordnance, and he has also contributed many photographs that have appeared in Detail & Scale publications.

Jim is the father of three grown children, and grandfather to six.

Colonel Gerald Knox Bishop, USAF (Ret.) - Contributor

Colonel Knox Bishop served for over 25½ years on active duty in the United States Air Force. During his career, Colonel Bishop served as a Command Pilot, and as a planner, programmer, war game & systems analyst, and congressional actions advisor at Major Air Command and Headquarters Air Force levels. He also served as Executive to the Commander in Chief, Strategic Air Command  (who also functioned as the Joint Chiefs of Staff ‘s Director of Strategic Target Planning, responsible for the nuclear war plans).   During his career Knox participated in the planning of the full range of issues from national nuclear policy and arms control to Air Force-wide mission area analyses, Air Force war fighting force structure and its supporting systems and the programming, budgeting & congressional support planning they required.    He was intimately involved with the Air Force’s most advanced technologies, from stealth bombers and cruise missiles to advanced ballistic missile and space systems, including third generation trans-atmospheric vehicles.   He served as Vice Commander of the 384th Bomb Wing flying B-1Bs & KC-135Rs at McConnell AFB, Kansas, for two years. He served again at Headquarters U. S. Air Force until August 1991 in the position of Director, Strategic & Global Force Analyses. 

Colonel Bishop's flying experience includes over 3,000 flying hours in ten different aircraft.  These include the T-37, T-38, and T-41 trainers, and the T-39A mission support aircraft.  His time in strategic bomber aircraft include the B-52C, D, F, and G Stratofortress, FB-111A and the B-1B.  He also flew the KC-135R tanker.   For 489 days in 1970, 1971, 1972, and 1973, he flew 119 combat missions in Southeast Asia in the B-52, including the "Eleven Day War" over Hanoi. He has been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and six Air Medals for his combat service.   Later, he helped plan and analyze the effectiveness of strike and support sorties for the first Gulf War.

Following retirement from active duty, Knox served as the Curator of The Frontiers of Flight Museum at Dallas Love Field for 10½ years. He also served as Operations Director for the FINA Dallas Airshow at Dallas Love Field for eight years. He retired from in July 2004 and now volunteers there while residing full time in Graham, Texas.  

Knox has published aviation history articles for the "Journal” of the International Plastic Modelers Society since 1966, and has published military history articles in "Campaigns" magazine as well. He taught the history of aviation for Mountain View College’s Professional Aviation curriculum in Dallas for nine years.  He created and presented forty-six aviation history programs totaling over 2,400 pages for The Frontiers of Flight Museum in Dallas, and taught over 250 hours of aviation history courses for the museum’s Docent corps.

Knox often posts photographs of interesting aircraft on Detail & Scale’s Facebook page and includes interesting historical and technical information.  He is also a great resource for information for Detail & Scale’s website.

He is married to his high school sweetheart, Becky, of Graham, Texas, and they have two married adult daughters, and four grandchildren.   His interests include flying, aircraft history, illustration, and model making.   He has owned & flown a Cessna 182 and still enjoys actively flying his own 1947 Navion.

Jim Escalle - Contributing Photographer

Jim Escalle was born and raised in the San Joaquin Valley town of Delano, California. Growing up in an agricultural community, he remembers having a love of aviation since the first time he saw a Stearman crop duster at the local airport and was allowed to sit in it. Fascinated with anything related to World War II at the time, especially the air war, Jim liked to watch movies on the subject, along with reading just about every book he could find. He enjoyed scale modeling for many years, and also went to local air shows, seeing and taking pictures of airplanes such as the P-51 Mustang and P-47 Thunderbolt going through their amazing aerial maneuvers. But he enjoyed the modern jets as well. When time permits, he still likes to visit and take photos at nearby air museums, air shows and special events. Jim received a degree in Liberal Studies from California State University, Fresno, in 1983 and has been involved in public education at the elementary school level for almost thirty years. He is also the author of Unforgotten Hero, which tells the life story of his uncle, a U.S. Air Force fighter pilot who became missing in action during the Korean War. Jim is a frequent contributor on the Detail & Scale Facebook page, and he also contributes photographs to Detail & Scales digital publications. He currently lives in Bakersfield, California.

Allen Jones - Contributing Photographer

Allen Jones was born into a military family and spent three years overseas at Kadena AB, Okinawa, Japan, listening to the sounds of F-15s and the SR-71s flying overhead, but for the most part he grew up in Bellevue, Nebraska, just outside of Offutt Air Force Base. While still a youngster, he enjoyed reading books about military aviation, learning how to build scale models, and watching aircraft flying in and out of Offutt. His dad also took him to the SAC Museum, which at that time was just outside of base, and he never missed an airshow at the base. After high school, Allen was still building models and doing research on aircraft while going to college to study computer network system's. While Allen was working one of many temporary jobs in the computer field, he saw a picture on a coworker's desk and recognized it as the engineer's panel off of a B-36 Peacemaker. That coworker invited him to the SAC Museum at it new and current location and offered him the opportunity to come be a restorer. Allen became a volunteer in the Restoration Shop and worked on many aircraft including the B-36, B-17, B-29, F-101, and many others. He still volunteers in the Restoration Shop and also gives special tours for veterans at the museum. During his first years at the museum, Allen started learning how to take detailed photos (especially in poor lighting) as references for restoration purposes. From there, Allen started using that skill to take photos of aircraft in other museums and at airshows for modeling references. In 2009, Allen started going to IPMS (International Plastic Modelers Society ) meetings, and in 2011, Allen joined the Fort Crook chapter in Nebraska. He also got a chance to take a ride in a small plane out of the Aero Club on base. After that flight, he went home and did some research and discovered that a local college had an Airframe & Powerplants school. In 2012, he went back in school to become A&P certified. While still in school, Allen started volunteer work on the P-51D Mustang, "The Gunfighter," out of Council Bluffs airport in Iowa. Once he completed A&P school in 2014, Allen started working at a local airport on general aviation aircraft. While using his skills photographing details of aircraft, Allen shared some of his detail photos of several rare aircraft with Detail & Scale. Some of these have appeared on Detail & Scale's Facebook page, while others will be appearing on the D&S website. Still others will be included in some of the Detail & Scale digital publications.

Scott Manning - Contributing Photographer

Scott Manning was born in the southern California town of Upland and grew up in the nearby town of Rancho Cucamonga.  His love of airplanes started when his dad took him to Cable Airport for their fly-in.  However, it was an air show at Chino Airport in 1979, called the Gathering Of Eagles, that introduced him to aircraft of the WW-II, and a life-long love affair was born.  Some of his most Cherished memories involve getting up before dawn and going to air shows all around southern California with his dad. These included March AFB, George AFB, Norton AFB, Edwards AFB, the Naval Weapons Center at China Lake, NAS Miramar, and NAS Point Mugu. Using a Nikon camera he received for Christmas Scott began to document many of the aircraft at these shows.

After entering high school in 1985, Scott soon began volunteering at the Planes Of Fame Air Museum in Chino, California.  His first assignment was to help remove the olive drab paint from Piccadilly Lilly II, the B-17 Flying Fortress that belongs to the museum.  In an example of life coming full circle, he is currently training to be a docent at the Planes Of Fame Museum.
Scott has developed a yen for traveling in recent years.  He has been to the National Air And Space Museum, National Museum of the United States Air Force in Dayton, Ohio, the Pima Air And Space Museum, and Castle Air Museum with many more on his bucket list.

Scott takes many photos that appear on the Detail & Scale Facebook page, and has also done specific photography for Detail & Scale digital publications and the Detail & Scale website.
